Monade es el proyecto paralelo al que dedica el tiempo Lætitia Sadier cuando descansa de Stereolab. Un proyecto de pop experimental que comenzó en 1996, como entretenimiento conjunto entre ella y Rosie Cuckston, de Pram, y que, tras el abandono de ésta, ha ido creciendo hasta convertirse en cuarteto con la inclusión de la bajista Marie Merlet, al teclista Nicolas Etienne y al percusionista Xavier Chavellard. Sadier se ocupa de cantar, del Moog, del trombón y de percusiones ocasionales, además de componer.

El tercer álbum de Monade, "Monstre Cosmic", se publica el 18 de febrero.

YMCK - Family Genesis (2008)

YMCK es una banda pop japonesa más específicamente de Tokyo, conformada por tres personas Midori (voz), Yokemura (música, letras) y Nakamura (música y vídeo) quienes ocupan una Nintendo de 8bits para hacer su música. Su primer disco "Family Music" fue lanzado en el 2004 con éxitos como Magical 8bit Tour o Yellow, Magenta, Cyan and Black.

El guitarrista de Death Cab For Cutie y entre otras cosas productor de grupos como The Decemberists ahora se aventura por fin a lanzar un disco en solitario. El 29 de enero de 2008 saldrá a la venta Field Manual a través de Barsuk Records.

En este álbum Walla toca casi todos los instrumentos, dejándole al New Pornographer Kurt Dahle y al Death Cab For Cutie Jason McGerr apoderarse de la batería. Walla ya anteriormente se escondía bajo el nombre de Martin Youth Auxiliary como proyecto en solitario.

Por cierto, Field Manual incluirá dos descartes de Plans, el último álbum de Death Cab.

The Ruby Suns - Sea Lion (Sub Pop, 2008)

Segundo disco en grande de esta gente de Nueva Zelanda. Se hace mas notoria la influencia Brian Wilson, discos como los de Panda Bear, Architecture in Helsinki, Animal Collective y éste son clara muestra del pop sesentero, además de las bellas melodías y ambientes interesantes, recoge algunos elementos de folk africano y polinesio.

World music o, lo que es lo mismo, “músicas del mundo” es el incierto etiquetaje donde recalan todos esos grupos inclasificables defenestrados por la crítica musical después de intentar sin éxito definir su estilo sonoro. Yeasayer, con la sonrisa de los eternos jugones y un mejunje corrosivo multicolor de carta de presentación, completan el debut más hiperbólico de las postrimerías de lo que va de temporada. Música del mundo sin origen y con todos los orígenes posibles a la vez.

Los que recuerden a TV On The Radio, Animal Collective o a David Byrne con Brian Eno que no se den con un canto en la cabeza, andan en lo cierto. Pero resulta curioso como un disco tan atemporal y, aparentemente inconexo, encuentra un paralelismo tan cercano en lo que fechas de edición se refiere. Love Is Simple, el último trabajo de Akron/Family, comparte sorprendentemente la rítmica tribal, la dispersión psicodélica con juegos de voces de otro planeta, sintetizadores, la fuerza en el directo y una revisión exhaustiva de sus propias almas. No es una casualidad buscar la fumata blanca del chamán amazónico más cercano después de las primeras escuchas de ambos discos para resolver si uno se encuentra despierto o en pleno sueño revelador. Para poder entrar por la alfombra roja del sonido de Yeasayer es necesario recalcar que merecen y necesitan más de una escucha si se quiere percibir las mil y un visos que puede producir su mundo. El esfuerzo se verá gratamente recompensado.

Después de los tres primeros temas entre los que se encuentran los dos hits más conocidos y de un formato más convencional (“Sunrise” y “2080”) empieza el mejor pasaje del disco. “Germs”, “No need to worry”, “Waves” y “Red Cave” (tema escondido al final del disco) envuelven con su áurea hipnótica repleta de matices y instrumentos que aparecen y desaparecen como la aleta de la ballena blanca jamás cazada.

Hacer hincapié que solo desde la perspectiva de músicos multiinstrumentistas se puede llegar a tan altas cuotas de comunión sonora. La clave reside en la desmitificación de cada miembro de la banda para que cada uno de ellos se diluya en un todo. No existen ni Anand Wilder ni Luke Fasano ni Ira Wolf Tuton ni Chris Keating ni Brooklyn como marco sonoro. Solo existen cuarenta y siete minutos de buena música. Cuando el cantante pasa a ser guitarra, tocar el sitar con ecos infinitos, repetir una base con el sintetizador o una voz más de los coros que dan la réplica a su propia voz y así hasta rizar aún más el rizo. Cuando la música deviene un juego al alcance de unos pocos. Dense el gusto.

The Do - A Mouthful (Get Døwn!, 2008)

La banda franco-finlandesa Thedø es una apuesta ganadora. De esas veces que escuchas una canción y sin querer se te cuela en la cabeza donde la tienes clavada en la cabeza el resto del día, o el mes. Y después te pasas por su MySpace y el resto de canciones está al mismo nivel.
¿Quiénes son? Olivia B. Merilahti, una joven graduada en el conservatorio Jazz de Helsinki y el francés Dan Levy, músico de jazz y compositor de bandas sonoras. Sacan su primer álbum Mouthful en Enero del 2008. Como muchas bandas prometedoras, se están haciendo dando a conocer rápidamente gracias a que su single On My Shoulders aparece en un spot de televisión, en este caso como banda sonora del anuncio de cuadernos Oxford.
